- BEWARE !! - All products are not the same.
Many manufactures now make identical
looking hardware for Home Centers and cut-rate builders,
handymen, locksmiths & security companies by changing the internal design.
Take a deadbolt lockset for example - You only get 1/2 of the bolt with a plastic and/or die cast cylinder with a
brass or nickel coating to disguise the real properties - low in cost but
not very durable - interestingly
enough this is where 99% of the locks security is - so beware.

The law, in most jurisdictions, requires that any person should be
able to exit any commercial building in an unimpeded manner. Further, that
law states that any designated fire exit (Virtually any door that permits
egress from the building.) cannot have any lock, chain, bolt or device that
requires a key or "any specialized knowledge" to operate - "even in the
dark".
- Group Home Hardware
-
Group Homes have express needs for special hardware that secures the home but will not allow a person to be locked out if they walk
outside, especially during winter in the middle of the night.
- Residential Hardware
-
There's an old Yiddish proverb that says: "Locks are for honest people." And,
it's amazing how many people fall prey to the idea that if the bad guys want in badly
enough, there's nothing that you can do about it. Well, like the old English proverb said:
"It's foolish to bolt your door with a boiled carrot!"
- Handing of Hardware & Doors
-
Most hardware and door are handed, Some products are very specific
on the handing since not everything is reversible. Here is a handing chart..
